Japan's 2026 solar tariffs are set — ground-mounted support ends in fiscal 2027

Japan has set its procurement prices for fiscal 2026. Residential solar drops from 24 yen to 8.3 yen, commercial rooftop from 19 yen to 8.3 yen, both in stages. More importantly, from fiscal 2027 ground-mounted commercial solar leaves the FIT/FIP support scheme entirely — fiscal 2026 is the last window to obtain certification.
Solar prices for fiscal 2026
Residential (under 10 kW) receives 24 yen for the first four years and 8.3 yen for years five to ten, over a ten-year period. Commercial rooftop (10 kW and above) receives 19 yen for five years and 8.3 yen for years six to twenty, over twenty years. Both use an upfront-investment support design that lowers the initial burden.
Ground-mounted projects get a single price: 9.9 yen for 10–50 kW and 9.6 yen for 50 kW and above outside the auction, both over twenty years.
Projects of 250 kW and above go through the FIP auction. Four rounds are held in fiscal 2026, each with a ceiling price of 9.60 yen.
From fiscal 2027: ground-mounted loses support
Ground-mounted commercial solar exits the FIT/FIP support scheme from fiscal 2027. New ground-mounted projects must secure certification during fiscal 2026 to receive support.
Rooftop installations remain eligible and keep the upfront-investment support scheme.
Fiscal 2026 is the last supported year for ground-mounted commercial solar in Japan.
What it means for existing plants
Plants already operating under FIT keep their tariff. The new prices apply only to new certifications and are not retroactive.
But tighter economics for new projects feed through into valuations, resale prices and how operators approach maintenance. Once support ends, output is the entire revenue base: identical equipment can differ by several percent a year depending on whether soiling, shading and inverter downtime are addressed.
